Our Story
If you've ever travelled to Ireland and wandered into a proper pub, chances are you've ordered a bowl of soup or a hearty stew. And if it was any decent pub, it would have arrived with thick slices of fresh Irish brown bread and a generous spread of Irish butter.
Maybe you took one bite and thought, "Where has this been all my life?"
That's the bread I set out to recreate.
It's for the Irish who have moved thousands of miles from home and miss the simple comfort of a proper slice of brown bread. It's for the travellers who haven't stopped thinking about the bread they enjoyed on their trip to Ireland. And it's for anyone who's never experienced real Irish brown bread before and is about to discover why generations of Irish families have treasured it.
The flour traditionally used in Ireland is different from what we have here in British Columbia. Irish flour is generally softer and has its own unique character, and those grains simply aren't grown here. Rather than trying to imitate it with imported ingredients, I've chosen to embrace the exceptional ingredients available around us. I take great pride in using high-quality stoneground organic flour, fresh, pure buttermilk, and simple, natural ingredients to recreate the bread I grew up with while staying true to where it's baked today.
The recipe itself has been passed down through my family for generations, beginning with my grandmother, Nancy Healy. Every loaf is handmade here in Vancouver, BC, with care, respect for tradition, and a genuine love for honest food.
I hope every slice brings back a memory, creates a new one, or simply becomes your favourite loaf of bread.
